What is your job role and what does this involve?

I would have to describe my role as diverse within W H Kirkwood Ltd which, under the heading of Training and Standards, mainly involves monitoring and arranging training for the workforce, completion and submission of PQQ’s and tender Quality Assessments, marketing, and keeping Health & Safety documents and manuals up-to-date.

Day-to-day work tasks can be a real mixed-bag but can involve:

  • Prepare yearly Training Plan and book training courses
  • Preparing and developing in-house safety policies to ensure they comply with current legislation
  • Research and application of project opportunities through completion of Prequalification Questionnaires or preparing company presentations
  • Attend networking and business development events
  • Update and distribution of the company brochure and newsletter to our client database
  • Plan and present H&S campaigns to the workforce

It’s fair to say that this can be a demanding role but it’s certainly never boring! 2014 marks my 20th year with WHK.

How has your company benefitted from being a member of BCTG?

The 2 key things which I personally have gained from our membership are the opportunity to meet with individuals who have a similar role to myself within the industry, sharing information and looking at ways to improve access and quality of training which is relevant to our industry. Also, my role as Training Co-ordinator also means I am responsible for the training budget which is made incredibly easy through BCTG as the courses are well subsidised.
